Indian Restaurant Design - Patri - Case Study

It all started on a night out with my girls and as always we wanted to try out something new. Luckily for us we had a new street food indian restaurant open down the road so naturally we had to try it out! Little did I know the lovely guy to serve us that day was Puneet Wadhwani, owner and foodie extraordinaire at Patri, who proceeded to tell us with so much enthusiam about the origin and authenticity of each dish. Of course once I knew he owned the place I had to complement him on the quirky interiors!

I loved Puneets passion for food and need to serve people with authentic food, just like we had on the stations in India. Those of you that have had the “pleasure” of experiencing Indian train stations will concur that it is a literal assault to the senses. the smells, the colour, the chaos. The relief of finding a seat where you don’t feel like you are at the bottom of a sardine tin then getting your “chaiwala” bring you a steaming cup of sweet hot tea in a tiny glass. Just perfect.

This is the feeling Puneet wanted to evoke in patrons of Patri (literally translated to railway tracks). I worked with him and his partners to come up with a theme for their new Ealing Broadway branch , it needed to bring in the style and feel of the existing successful branches in Hammersmith and Northfields, whilst still offering something new to the changing demographics of Ealing.

The site was previously Flaming Cow, a fast food burger place that had a lot of earthy rustic elements. Sustainability was an important consideration in this project, so with a great team of contractors, most of the existing furniture and fittings were reused or repurposed. Almost all new and recycled materials were sourced from local suppliers thereby reducing the carbon footprint and local tradespeople were employed for all the fit out, myself included of course!

The final design for Patri incorporates a blue train wall mural, designed by Blue Feather Designs, complete with carriages, a new lift to faciliate smoother food service, recycled whiskey barrels for the bar (my personal favourite!) and a striking mural designed by one of Puneets contractors.

The atmosphere created is vibrant, fun and just the right amount of crazy. I am so pleased with how it turned out, would love your thoughts on it too!

A train carriage mural designed by Blue Feather designs is the showstopper of the design!
