5 Tips to help with Energy Costs

First there was the Pandemic and then came the energy hikes, economically things have been beyond tough these past few years. However I felt a bit of comfort seeing the high streets buzzing around London again almost single handedly due to hospitality businesses!

Without seeming like I am spouting the obvious, I thought I would revisit some ways you may be able to help with your energy costs, sometimes it is the simplest things that go overlooked!

Lighting

LED lights is an obvious one, but I am still seeing so many establishments without them! Adding sensors to them means they will only come on when needed, useful in areas such as breakout rooms, store rooms, WC etc

Second Hand Equipment

I am always an advocate for reusing equipment and buying second hand when needed, but this also means you really have to be on top of the energy efficiency. Newer models are more so than older ones. Regular servicing will also ensure that things are as they should be. Tailoring the menu so that you have regular efficient use of equipment means you will be making the best use from the energy consumed. It is complex, so let me know if you want more info on this.

Heating and Cooling

Heating and cooling is probably the biggest expense for restaurants, no real get around this but do ensure the building is well insulated so you dont lose precious hot/cold air. MVHR systems are expensive to install but in the long run do mean huge savings as you are recirculating the hot air to where it is needed.

I have seen a few cool innovations to replace outdoor heating, but again if you dont want to invest at this point, blankets are always a welcome gesture!

Utility Suppliers

Finally review your suppliers every time contracts are due for renwal. The renewable energy suppliers are coming in fast, from what I have seen they are quite competitive in cost too so it is defintely worth checking!

Let me know your thoughts on this, is there anything you would add?
