5 Eco-Friendly Restaurant Design Ideas

Creating beautiful interiors is important to the overall customer experience. Consumers are increasingly becoming aware of the environmental impact of their decisions and are consciously trying to make changes in this direction.

As a restaurant there are small changes that can make a big impact and create a good impression on your customers as well as the planet!

Here are 5 ideas for an eco-friendly restaurant:

  1. Look at portion sizes, food waste is a huge contributor to your carbon footprint. If you find customers are consistently wasting food, it is usually that the sizes are too big! Encourage diners to take home any leftovers.

  2. Think about your packaging, reusable plastic containers are actually better than single use packaging that cannot be reused or recycled. Remember most cardboard and paper packaging cannot be recycled once it is contaminated with food or grease. Using branded containers can also be a marketing opportunity as they will think of you when reusing their tubs!

  3. Consider Eco initiatives such as helping in your local community, planting trees etc using proceeds from sales. It is good for you and helps the consumer feel they are making ethical decisions when dining with you too! Win-Win!

  4. Choose eco-friendly furniture and fittings in your space. This is not just about materials that can be recycled, but materials and items that you can be sure will be reused and repurposed. Always considering the end of life of each item you source. If suppliers can not help you with this, find a designer that will help you with the research. I have a few blogs on types of materials to consider, do take a look.

  5. Review your energy consumption. Currently one of the biggest costs for operators, reviewing your consumption of energy to ensure you are being as resourceful as possible will help with the bills as well as being more eco-friendly. Open doors in the summer, ensure windows and doors are well fitted for insulation to help through the winter. Consider heat pumps that circulate the hot the air through your space, to lower the amount of heat required.

These are a few of the small steps you can take towards becoming a more eco-friendly restaurant. I always say that you don’t have to strive for perfection, but always looking to improve!
