Get (your house) in shape for the New Year!

After taking down all the Christmas decorations, it is common to get the January blues. The house feels bare and tired and it seems to have lost its sparkle (quite literally!)

Follow these 3 easy steps to get your house in shape and beat the January blues!

1. Dump the Junk!

I spoke about Ikigai in my previous blog, read here if you haven't already! This is all about creating the optimal space for living, clearing your junk and clutter is the best way to do this!

This may seem overwhelming if you have not done this in a while. I would recommend doing one room per day, or if a room is particularly bad, split it into sections over 2 or 3 days. Look at absolutely everything you own. Spare no prisoners. If there is an ornament that you cant remember where its from and it does not spark much enthusiasm when you look at it, GET RID! Similarly with clothes you have kept but have not worn in over a year, the chances are you wont be wearing them again, GET RID!

Look up your local soup kitchens and charity shops, to see what they might need, your junk may just make someones day! If you need a bit of extra cash, there are plenty of selling sites that you could make use of, ebay, gumtree, shpock to name a few!

By the time you are done, the house will feel tidier, clutter free and fresh!

2. Open the windows!

It is really easy to coup yourself up in the cold winter months. Opening windows not only aerates the house, but will perk you up and make you feel much better too!

Drying clothes inside starts to cause condensation inside the house, even if you cant see it, this can cause damp and mould, yuck! Opening the windows every day even for a few minutes will minimise this issue, and keep the house smelling lovely and fresh!

3. Invest in new decor

I know December is expensive, and you have probably hit the sales too, so spending more may seem nuts! However investing in even one nice piece as the season changes, can really change the look and feel of a room and instantly give it an update. Consider a new cushion, vase or artwork. Dont forget you can browse the Blue Feather artwork here (I really do spoil you for choice!), choose one with a vibrant colour to really uplift you!
